Freistadt: A Medieval Brewing Town in the Mühlviertel Region

Freistadt is the district capital of the Lower Mühlviertel and is located about 38 kilometers northeast of Linz and only about 17 kilometers south of the Czech border. The old town, laid out according to a plan dating back to 1220, is still almost entirely surrounded by a medieval city wall with two city gates, making Freistadt one of the best-preserved historic towns in Austria. As a town with a rich tradition of brewing and hosting trade fairs, Freistadt offers good infrastructure for commuters from the neighboring municipalities of Grünbach and Rainbach im Mühlkreis. After work, the historic old town is the perfect place for a stroll.
