Mariazell: Austria's Most Important Pilgrimage Site
Mariazell is located in the Bruck-Mürzzuschlag district near the Lower Austrian border. With its Baroque basilica, it is Austria’s most significant pilgrimage site and one of the most important in Europe, attracting approximately one million pilgrims each year. As Austria’s third-largest municipality by area and, at 868 meters, the country’s highest-elevation municipal district, Mariazell has also included the formerly independent towns of Gußwerk, Halltal, and St. Sebastian since the 2015 municipal restructuring. Its strong focus on tourism ensures that the town center is bustling year-round. After work, the mountains surrounding the Hochschwab invite visitors to go hiking.
