Tasks and content of your apprenticeship in retail

Typical tasks as an apprentice in retail are

  • Conducting sales talks and advising customers competently
  • Cashiering and processing of different payment methods
  • Accept, check and store goods properly
  • Manage shelves and ensure an appealing presentation of goods
  • Set up promotional areas and implement seasonal focuses
  • Determine requirements and prepare goods procurement and orders
  • Carry out inventories (may vary depending on the apprenticeship) and check stocks of goods
  • Close cooperation with your colleagues in day-to-day operations

Requirements for apprenticeships in retail

No special prior knowledge is required for an apprenticeship in retail. What is important is a compulsory school-leaving certificate as well as your motivation and enjoyment of working with people.

Duration and course of the training

The retail apprenticeship lasts three years. During this time, you will gain practical experience in sales at your training company and regularly attend vocational school.

The training content builds on each other: With each year of your apprenticeship as a retail sales assistant, your specialist knowledge will grow, you will take on more responsibility and you will be intensively prepared for the final apprenticeship examination. After successfully completing your apprenticeship, you will be a qualified retail sales assistant and well prepared for your future career in retail.

Apprenticeship income in the retail sector

During your training as a retail salesperson, you will receive a monthly apprentice salary above the collective agreement for the industry. This increases with each year of your apprenticeship.

Your income during your retail apprenticeship:

  1. Year of apprenticeship: from € 1.220,-
  2. Year of apprenticeship: from € 1.350,-
  3. Year of apprenticeship: from € 1.580,-
